British funnyguy Russell Brand will join Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough, and Mary J. Blige in the film adaptation of Broadway’s Tony-nominated smash Rock of Ages.
Hairspray lensman Adam Shankman will step behind the camera to direct the movie musical, a love story playing out to the soundtrack of some of the biggest hits of the 1980s. Rock of Ages features tunes by Pat Benatar, Bon Jovi, Journey, Poison, and Twisted Sister. Russell — the star of Hop and Arthur, the No. 1 and No. 2 comedies in America at last weekend’s box office — will play Lonny, the show’s narrator and a rock club operator.
“I can officially announce Russell Brand as your Lonny in #rockofagesmovie ! I see a mullet in his future…maybe a Nikki Six?” Shankman announced in a Tweet on Wednesday.
At last week’s Arthur premiere, Russell commented on reports that he’d be joining the cast: “Yeah, I might be, if I can work out the scheduling. … Because it’s difficult with my wife and everything, I have to work out the schedule.”
Production on the film is expected to begin next month. Rock of Ages is being eyed for a 2012 opening.
