The Black Eyed Peas are creating a music academy that will train teenagers on how to produce video and original music using professional-quality equipment, The Associated Press has learned.
On Tuesday, the six-time Grammy Award winners announced that their Peapod Foundation has partnered with the Adobe Foundation to open the Peapod Adobe Youth Voices Music & Multimedia Academy in Lower Manhattan. The foundations already run three Youth Voices Academies in California – one in Los Angeles and two others in Oakland and nearby Redwood City. The academy, which will offer training to kids 13 to 19, is being housed in a facility operated by Urban Arts Partnership, which runs after-school arts programs for at-risk youth attending schools in communities high in poverty. Students will be accepted into the academy based on recommendations from teachers as well as their interests in subject areas such as camera work, editing, and graphic design, says Peas hitmaker Will.i.am.
“Our passion for music and media was fuelled by many generous people on our road to success. Expanding the network of Peapod Adobe Youth Voices academies enables us to pay it forward, giving more youth the skills and encouragement they need to realise their dreams.”
Classes begin this July.
