Star Mariska Hargitay Adopts Baby Girl

Hargitay, who won an Emmy for her role as Det. Olivia Benson on the longrunning NBC crime drama, and her husband of six years, actor Peter Hermann, just adopted a African-American baby girl born in Texas last week. Little Amaya Josephine is making her big debut, alongside Mom, on the pages of this month’s PEOPLE Magazine

“I’m deliriously happy,” says Mariska, who already has a four-year-old son, August. “Were considering both international and domestic adoption and we’re thrilled that this is the way our prayers were answered. We talked a lot about mixed-race adoptions, and we are very excited that we are now a multi-racial family. We’re just so happy she’s here.”

The actress says August is thrilled with the arrival of his baby sister.

“He is over the moon. He calls her his baby because he says the whole thing was his idea. He always talks about how he’s going to protect her. He’s going to be a great big brother.”

Mariska and Peter had been seriously considering adding a new member to the family every since a 2008 set stunt left the actress with a collapsed lung, well-placed insiders tell The New York Post.

“‘Law & Order’ has been filming in New York, but they wrote her out of the script for this week and she will not return until Monday. This has been kept a huge secret on the set — somebody who was hired as a crew member was fired for tweeting about it. She went down to Texas late last week to get the baby.”
