Her elimination came as a surprise to the show’s judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson. Pia’s exit was American Idol’s second major shocking elimination of the show’s 10th season, following Casey Abrams just a few weeks ago — but this time there was no “Judges’ Save” to keep one lone castoff in the competition.
“I’m shocked, I’m angry. I don’t even know what to say,” a tearful Lopez remarked.
Judge Steven Tyler blamed America, suggesting the voting public got it totally wrong.
“I don’t know. America, man. You know, a mistake is one thing, but lack of passion is unforgivable. They’re wrong,” he said. “I don’t know what happened with this. She’s beautiful. When she sings, she’s a bird.”
Randy suggested fans remember that “no one is ever safe.”
“No one is ever safe… so you gotta vote for whomever you love. I’m never upset on this show, and I’m never really mad, but this makes me mad, it’s like, ‘What is going on?’”
Even Pia had a tough time processing the stunning news.
“I was getting very lightheaded,” Pia, 22, told L&S. “To be in the position I was in last night was a bit much and a little overwhelming.” She tried to take deep breaths as she sang her swan song, The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You.”
The aspiring star seemed to be in much better spirits after a goodnight’s sleep. She appeared upbeat and bubbly as she made the rounds on the morning shows Friday.
